COOK ISLANDS WOMEN’S 3X3 BASKETBALL TEAM WIN MORE GOLD AT THE COOK ISLANDS SPORTS AWARDS
Women’s 3×3 basketball humbly cheered their way to victory Sunday evening 21st October, as they came away with not one, but two trophies.
The team tasted success at the South Pacific Mini Games last year in Vanuatu where they won gold and swiftly marked memorable moments for basketball in the Cook Islands. It was a first for the Cook Islands to win gold in Basketball and a first for the Cook Islands to win gold in 3×3. Achieving gold they were ranked the top 3×3 womens basketball team in Oceania, a rare achievement for the Cook Islands. Leading up to the gold medal placing the team undertook challenges in a few other tournaments and also off court demands.
Terai Sadler who attended the awards on behalf of the team commented that, “It’s tough being from such a small nation with limited funding, and resources. However, we managed to stick together and grind it out and we definitely would not have done it without the support of our family and friends who have kindly donated time, money and words of wisdom. It’s nice to get recognised for our achievements, we’re all extremely grateful.”
Basketball is definitely growing to be more popular in the Cook Islands and Cook Islands Sports National Olympic Committee only hopes to see more sporting success like this in other codes.
